ii. Jonah responds to God’s re-call, 3:3a

3:3a. Thinking back to the shock of the initial response of God’s prophet, readers may wait with curiosity and eagerness to see if Jonah has learned his lesson. In 1:2–3, God had said Get up! and Jonah got up … but went to Tarshsish. Now, in 3:2–3, God said again Get up! and Jonah got up. What would he do?

And went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord. What a relief! One can almost hear the collective sighs of the original audience. Finally! The prophet did what he should have done the first time! The ascent in obedience and submission to God’s holy appointment continues. In spite of his disdain for the assignment which, readers have no reason to believe has subsided but, rather, has merely been trumped by God’s obvious sovereignty, Jonah makes the trip to Assyria.
